Temporary Teaching Opportunities

Part-time Lecturers (Non-Senate)

The Department of Gender Studies at UCLA receives applications on an ongoing basis for part-time lecturer positions for teaching a course in Gender Studies.  Appointments are made in general on a quarterly basis.  Quarter academic appointment dates are as follows (and may differ from actual instruction dates):

Fall: October 1-December 31st
Winter: January 1-March 31st
Spring: April 1-June 30th

Salary is commensurate with applicant qualifications and experience; percentage of appointment commensurate with teaching load. See Table 15 Unit 18 Faculty Pre-Six – AY (ucop.edu) for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position: $66,259 – $83,935.

Requirements: Applicants with a Ph.D. are preferred. Applicants who are advanced to Ph.D. candidacy or who have a M.A., M.F.A., or equivalent may be considered (currently enrolled UC students are not considered).

Gender Studies Teaching Assessment Review Process

Temporary teaching instructors are reviewed on a quarter by quarter basis.  Course syllabi are to be submitted to the Chair/Vice Chair for approval at least two weeks prior to the start of the quarter the course will be offered, and course descriptions are due when teaching assignments are determined.  Teaching evaluations are reviewed by the Chair when they are available following the completion of a course, and feedback will be provided as needed.  Temporary teaching instructors who consistently teach for Gender Studies should expect a classroom visit and teaching report by a Gender Studies faculty member at least once annually.  Demonstration of teaching excellence is required for reappointment.

Under the direction of the Program Chair for the LGBTQ Studies minor and program, the Academic Administrator for LGBTQ Studies works to advance courses, programs and initiatives aimed at promoting research and academic pursuits in the area of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Studies at UCLA and beyond. The incumbent facilitates the intellectual and pedagogical development of programmatic and curricular initiatives spearheaded by the Faculty Advisor Committee for LGBTQ Studies in conjunction with the Gender Studies department. In addition, the LGBTQ Academic Administrator has duties in teaching core courses, and administrative oversight of the minor and program.

The responsibilities of the Academic Administrator fall into three broad areas outlined below:

1) Programmatic Oversight

LGBTQ Studies at UCLA has a long tradition of running a lecture series featuring prominent and junior scholars in the field. The Program also hosts an annual graduate student conference in Queer Studies, one of the first in the field’s history since 1999. The incumbent will be the primary advisor to the graduate students running this conference including, but not limited to leading the graduate student conference committee, selecting the academic theme and keynote, and overseeing all logistics related to the conference. Additionally, Undergraduate research has been central to the Program’s mission, and since 2014 the Program sponsors a cross-campus Undergraduate Research Organization in Queer Studies (Q-Scholars), culminating in an annual research symposium. The incumbent will be the yearlong faculty mentor to the undergraduate organization, developing workshops to facilitate student research and presentation skills. In addition, the incumbent will mentor and oversee the student leads for the annual research symposium.

2) Academic Innovation and Teaching

The successful candidate will have a strong track record of teaching excellence in the area of LGBTQ+, Critical Gender & Sexuality, and Queer Studies. The incumbent will teach 2-3 courses a year within the program including the core course, Introduction to LGBTQ Studies. In addition, the incumbent will work on curriculum development and academic initiatives for the minor: support ladder faculty interdisciplinary teaching, intentional cohort-based social engagement, and career/ alumni events.

3) Administration

The incumbent will be in charge of the administration of the Program and Minor in conjunction with the staff of Gender Studies. The AA will facilitate enrollment management, social events, and recruitment of students into the minor with the Student Affairs Advisor in the department. Under the direction of the Program Chair, the AA will identify teaching needs, and lead TA recruitment and selection. The incumbent will have general administrative responsibilities including, but not limited to, the Program website, facilities, merchandise, and graduation. The incumbent will process payments and travel related to the programmatic events and activities in consultation with the department coordinator and fund manager in Gender Studies.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Gender Studies, or in a Humanities, Social Sciences or Arts field of expertise related to the area of LGTBQ+ Studies. The incumbent will have an understanding of issues related to the fields of LGBTQ+, Critical Gender & Sexuality, and Queer Studies, as well as experience in teaching, pedagogical innovation, programming, and academic mentoring in these fields. Incumbent will have an expertise in university processes and procedures; demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to interact and lead effectively programs and activities involving faculty, staff, and students; interpersonal skills to interact effectively with persons of differing social, educational, economic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds; the ability to be flexible and pay attention to detail while keeping in mind the overall mission of the Department, Division, College and University.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Gender Studies, or in a Humanities, Social Sciences or Arts field of expertise related to the area of LGTBQ+ Studies.
