Dr. Safiya Noble Awarded Honorary Doctorate from Leiden University in the Netherlands

The letter announcing Dr. Noble’s honorary degree said in part: “Your book, ‘Algorithms of Oppression’ has inspired many of our colleagues, notably – but not only – those in the ‘d12n’ research cluster at CADS. Your book was a real milestone, and has helped to put debates about algorithms on a firmer footing at a time when critiques of algorithms risked being cheapened by indiscriminate use of concepts like ‘algorithmic power.’ Your perspective of Black Feminist Technology Studies goes beyond the familiar litany about what algorithms are doing to culture and society, opening up ways of imagining alternatives. At the same time, it is ruthless in calling out the racism and oppression built into existing commercial offerings.”
